The Spirit of Holiness

Romans 1:1-4; 1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name’s sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

There is so much misunderstanding regarding the Holy Trinity of God. It seems only fitting that Paul should address the Holy Spirit’s ministry as well as the Father and the Son.

Vs. 4 “ . . . declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, . . .”

A. The Spirit and the Triune GOD vs. 1-4

Christians are accused of worshipping 3 gods. That is not at all what we practice nor what we believe. Moses long ago wrote :

Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! This confession of monotheism does not preclude the biblical doctrine of the Trinity. “God” is plural (ÕeðloµhéÆm), possibly implying the Trinity, and one (Õeh\aµd_) may suggest a unity of the Persons in the Godhead (cf. Genesis 2:24, where the same word for ”one“ is used of Adam and Eve). Genesis 2:24 For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

The FATHER is GOD

The SON is GOD

Proverbs 30:2-4; 2 Surely I am more stupid than any man,

And I do not have the understanding of a man.

3 Neither have I learned wisdom,

Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.

4 Who has ascended into heaven and descended?

Who has gathered the wind in His fists?

Who has wrapped the waters in His garment?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is His name or His son’s name?

Surely you know! (Emphasis mine)

The SPIRIT is GOD Consider what Luke writes about the sin of Ananias and Sapphira; Acts 5:3,4; 3 “ . . . Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.’”

B. The Spirit of Holiness

In our text it is clear that:

God the Holy Spirit is Instrumental in the Revelation

“ . . . declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, . . .”

God the Holy Spirit is has Integrity in the Revelation

He is called the Spirit of Holiness and is associated with Truth and Holiness! See John 14:16,17; 16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans;. . .”

C. The Spirit of Life vs. 4

1. God the Holy Spirit is Instrumental in Regeneration

John 3:5,6; 5 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

2. God the Holy Spirit is Instrumental in Resurrection

Of our Lord; Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, . . .

Of the Believer; “ . . . He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.
