The Gospel, A Look Back

Romans 1:1-4; 1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,. . .”

Paul proclaimed the Gospel by pointing people to the Scriptures as they existed at that time.

A. The Prophetic Nature of the Promise vs. 2

It was Promised Beforehand

1. It Attests to the Harmony of Scripture

There are 66 books of the Bible written in three separate languages by 40 different authors living in various places, times and circumstances over a 1600 year period. Yet, with all of these variables, the Bible is a complete, harmonious whole! 2nd Peter 1:21 “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”

2. It Attributes to David a Messianic Heir

2nd Samuel 7:12, 15-17; 12 “When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. — 15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 “And your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. We see how literally God fulfilled this in the New Testament. See our text, Romans 1:3, and also in, Luke 1:27&30 – 33, when the angel, Gabriel, went 27 “to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.”

B. The Prophetic Record of the Promise vs. 2

It was Penned Beforehand

The promise of a Savior goes back to the beginning of the Divine Record where God promised Satan, Sin and Death would be defeated. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” CF Micah 5:2& 18,19;

2 “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity. ” 18 Who is a God like Thee, who pardons iniquity And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in unchanging love. 19 He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, Thou wilt cast all their sins Into the depths of the sea.

C. The Prophetic Message of the Promise vs. 3,4

It was Preached Beforehand

Isaiah 53:4-6; 4 “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.” Isaiah wrote these words about 2750 years ago! What a marvelous testimony to the Grace of God. They preached a message they did not fully understand! They were serving us and the angels curiosity! 1st Peter 1:10-12 “As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful search and inquiry, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.”

My friend. Do you “long to look” into these Things?” Perhaps your need as a sinner is just such a longing to come to Him.
